Facebook lead ads can produce leads at a very low cost. The problem many businesses find is that a lot of those leads never answer the phone, gave a fake number, or don't remember filling in the form.
Cheap leads are only good if they turn into customers. Here are eight ways to improve lead quality on Meta, based on campaigns I run for service businesses, including one where leads are routed automatically to a seven-person sales team.
Quick summary
- Add a little friction: higher-intent forms and qualifying questions.
- Tell Meta which leads were good by sending CRM data back.
- Call new leads within minutes, not days.
1. Use the higher-intent form type
Meta's instant forms let you choose a form type designed for more volume or one designed for higher intent. The higher-intent option adds a review step before submitting, so people confirm their details. You will usually get fewer leads, but more of them will be real.
2. Add one or two qualifying questions
Pre-filled forms make it too easy to submit without thinking. Add a short multiple-choice question that filters out people who are not a fit, for example:
- "What is your budget?" with realistic ranges
- "When are you looking to start?"
- "Which service do you need?"
Keep it to one or two questions. Too many and good leads will drop off too.
3. Write the ad copy for the right person, not everyone
If your ad promises "free" without saying who it's for, you attract everyone. Mention your price range, location or ideal customer in the copy. It reduces clicks from the wrong people before they ever see the form.
4. Send lead quality back to Meta
By default Meta optimises for anyone who submits a form. If you connect your CRM and send back which leads became qualified or became customers (Meta calls this conversion leads optimisation, using the Conversions API for CRM), the algorithm can learn to find more people like your good leads.
5. Respond within minutes
Lead quality often drops simply because follow-up is slow. Someone who filled in a form five minutes ago remembers you; someone contacted three days later often doesn't. Set up instant notifications and, if you have a sales team, automatic lead assignment.
For one client I set up leads from Meta and Google lead forms flowing into Google Sheets, assigned to sales reps in rotation with duplicate detection and instant email alerts. Faster contact made a clear difference to how many leads turned into conversations.
6. Test landing pages against instant forms
Instant forms are convenient, but a landing page asks for more effort, which can mean better leads. Run both and compare cost per qualified lead, not cost per lead.
7. Exclude people who already converted
Exclude recent leads and existing customers from prospecting, so you don't pay for duplicate submissions from the same people.
8. Track the right number
| Metric | Why it matters |
|---|---|
| Cost per lead (CPL) | Easy to measure, but can reward low-quality leads |
| Contact rate | Share of leads you actually reach |
| Cost per qualified lead | The number that reflects real performance |
| Cost per customer (CAC) | What the business ultimately pays |
Facebook lead ads vs. Google Ads for leads
Google Search reaches people actively searching for your service, so intent is usually higher. Meta reaches people before they search, often at a lower cost per lead. Many service businesses get the best result running both, measured on cost per qualified lead. Read more on my Google & Meta lead generation page.

Frequently asked questions
Why are my Facebook leads so bad?
Usually because the form is too easy to submit, the ad targets too broadly, and Meta is optimising for any submission rather than qualified leads. Higher-intent forms, qualifying questions and CRM feedback all help.
Are Facebook lead ads better than a landing page?
Instant forms usually give a lower cost per lead; landing pages often give better quality. Test both and compare cost per qualified lead.
How fast should I call a new lead?
As quickly as possible, ideally within minutes. Leads contacted quickly are far more likely to answer and remember your business.
