Advantage+ Shopping campaigns (ASC) changed how most Shopify brands run Meta ads. Instead of building ad sets by interest, age and placement, you give Meta your budget, your creative and a conversion goal, and its AI decides who sees what.
Meta has since folded this into its wider Advantage+ sales campaigns: when you create a Sales campaign today, Advantage+ is switched on by default. The name has changed, but the setup principles are the same. This guide walks through how I set them up for Shopify stores.
Quick summary
- Fix tracking first: Pixel plus Conversions API, with a clean Purchase event.
- Define your existing customers so you can see new vs. returning results.
- Feed it variety: 10–20+ creatives across formats and angles, plus your catalogue.
- Give it a budget it can learn on, and avoid editing it every day.
Before you start: get tracking right
Advantage+ relies almost entirely on conversion data. If Meta can't see your purchases accurately, it optimises towards the wrong people. Before launching, check:
- The Meta Pixel and the Conversions API are both sending Purchase events (the Facebook & Instagram app on Shopify handles both)
- Events are deduplicated, so each order is counted once
- Event match quality for Purchase is reasonable, and there are no warnings in Events Manager
- Your product catalogue is connected and synced, if you want catalogue ads
I've covered this in detail in how to set up the Meta Conversions API on Shopify.
Step 1: Define your existing customers
In Advertising settings for the ad account, add your existing customers: usually a Shopify customer list, plus website purchasers and engaged visitors if you want. This doesn't stop ads reaching them, but it lets you:
- See results split by new and existing customers
- Choose to prioritise new customer acquisition, where that option is offered
Without this, a campaign can look great while mostly re-selling to people who would have bought anyway. Keep the customer list updated, ideally automatically.
Step 2: Create the campaign
- In Ads Manager, click Create and choose the Sales objective.
- Keep the Advantage+ setup on (Meta shows when a campaign is running with full Advantage+ settings).
- Choose Website as the conversion location and Purchase as the conversion event.
- Set the country or countries you ship to. Leave age and detailed targeting open unless there's a legal or business reason to restrict it.
Changing core settings such as audience, placements or budget away from the Advantage+ defaults can switch the campaign out of full Advantage+ mode. That's sometimes the right call, but make it a deliberate choice.
Step 3: Choose budget and bid strategy
For a first campaign, I usually start with highest volume (no cost control) so the system can learn freely, then add a ROAS goal later once there's stable data.
- Budget: aim for enough to get roughly 50 purchases a week across the campaign. A practical rule is daily budget ≈ (target cost per purchase × 50) ÷ 7. If that's too much, start lower and accept a longer learning period.
- Minimum ROAS goal: useful when you need to protect margin. Set it at or above your break-even ROAS, and expect spend to drop if it's set too high.
- Cost per result goal: an option if you think in CPA rather than ROAS.
Step 4: Add creative (this is where results are decided)
With targeting automated, creative becomes your targeting. Each concept reaches different people. Give the campaign variety:
- 10–20+ ads to start, across static images, short videos (UGC, demos, founder-led) and carousels
- Different angles, not just different colours: problem/solution, social proof, product benefits, offer-led, comparison
- Catalogue ads (dynamic product ads) for stores with many products
- Vertical 9:16 versions for Reels and Stories, and 4:5 or 1:1 for Feed
Review Advantage+ creative enhancements before publishing. Some (like brightness or aspect-ratio adjustments) are usually fine; others, like automatically generated text or backgrounds, should be checked so they stay on-brand.
Step 5: Launch and leave it alone
The biggest mistake is editing too early. Give a new campaign at least 5–7 days before judging it, and avoid big budget changes or switching off ads during that time unless something is clearly wrong.
When you review, look at:
- Cost per purchase and ROAS against your break-even
- New vs. existing customer split
- Which ads are getting spend, and their CTR and conversion rate
- Blended results in Shopify (MER), not only Ads Manager
Ongoing optimisation
- Add new creative every 1–2 weeks and switch off ads that get spend but don't convert.
- Scale gradually: raise budgets around 15–20% every few days when results are stable. More on this in how to scale Facebook ads without killing ROAS.
- Keep a testing campaign separate if you want clean reads on new concepts, then move winners into the main campaign.
- Watch the existing-customer share: if it climbs, check your customer list and consider prioritising new customers.
When Advantage+ isn't the right fit
It works best for stores with solid purchase volume and accurate tracking. It can struggle with very new pixels with little purchase data, very small budgets, or products that need tight targeting for legal reasons. For a direct comparison, see Advantage+ Shopping vs. manual campaigns.
Frequently asked questions
Are Advantage+ Shopping campaigns still available?
Meta has merged Advantage+ Shopping into Advantage+ sales campaigns. When you create a Sales campaign in Ads Manager, Advantage+ settings are on by default, and the setup principles are the same.
How much budget does an Advantage+ Shopping campaign need?
Aim for enough budget to reach around 50 purchases per week. A simple formula is daily budget equals target cost per purchase times 50, divided by 7. Smaller budgets can work but take longer to learn.
How many creatives should I add to Advantage+?
Start with 10 to 20 or more ads across images, videos and carousels, using different angles. Add fresh creative every one to two weeks and switch off ads that spend without converting.
