Advantage+ Shopping vs Manual Campaigns: Which Wins for E-commerce?

Should you let Meta's AI run your ads with Advantage+, or keep control with manual campaigns? I've run both across Shopify and DTC accounts spending from a few hundred dollars a day to tens of thousands, and the honest answer is that it depends on your data, budget and creative.

Most accounts I manage today use Advantage+ as the main engine with a small amount of manual control around it. Here's how they compare and how to decide.

Quick summary

  • Advantage+ usually wins for stores with good tracking, steady purchase volume and plenty of creative.
  • Manual wins when you need control: new pixels, strict targeting, specific products or clean creative tests.
  • The best setup for most brands is a hybrid. Test them against each other properly before deciding.

When Advantage+ wins

  • Your tracking is solid: Pixel plus Conversions API with good event match quality
  • You have purchase volume: roughly 50+ purchases a week gives the system enough to learn from
  • You have creative variety: many concepts and formats to let it find different audiences
  • You sell broad-appeal products: fashion, beauty, home, gifts, accessories
  • You want efficiency at scale: fewer campaigns, less overlap, less daily management

In accounts like this, consolidating many manual ad sets into one Advantage+ campaign often lowers cost per purchase, mostly because the budget isn't split across overlapping audiences competing in the same auctions.

When manual campaigns win

  • New store or new pixel: with little purchase data, Advantage+ has nothing to learn from
  • Niche or regulated products: where targeting needs restrictions
  • Product or collection pushes: launches, clearance or high-margin hero products that need guaranteed spend
  • Clean creative testing: controlled tests where each concept gets fair spend
  • Too much spend on existing customers: when Advantage+ keeps favouring people who already buy from you

How to test Advantage+ vs. manual fairly

Many comparisons are unfair: an Advantage+ campaign with 20 new ads against an old manual campaign with tired creative. To get a real answer:

  1. Use the same creative in both, or as close as possible.
  2. Give both similar budgets and the same conversion event and attribution setting.
  3. Run for at least 2–3 weeks so both exit learning and have full data.
  4. Compare new-customer results, not just total ROAS, using your existing customer definitions.
  5. Check blended results in Shopify. If total revenue and MER improve when Advantage+ gets more budget, that's the strongest signal.

For a more rigorous answer, Meta's A/B test tool (Experiments) splits audiences so the two campaigns don't overlap.

The hybrid structure I use for most Shopify brands

CampaignTypeShare of budgetPurpose
Main salesAdvantage+60–80%Scaled prospecting and retargeting with proven creative
Creative testingManual (broad)10–20%Fair spend on new concepts before moving winners
Product or offer pushManual0–15%Launches, sales, hero products
Retargeting (optional)Manual0–10%Specific offers to cart abandoners, if Advantage+ under-serves them

Adjust the split to what your own data shows. If the main campaign keeps outperforming, give it more.

Common mistakes with each

Advantage+: launching with only 3–4 ads, editing daily, not defining existing customers, and trusting platform ROAS without checking Shopify.

Manual: too many small ad sets, heavy interest stacking, overlapping audiences, and not refreshing creative because "the targeting is the strategy".

The verdict

For most established e-commerce brands, Advantage+ should be the core of the account, and manual campaigns are the tools around it for testing and control. For new stores, start with simple manual broad campaigns, build purchase data, then move into Advantage+.

Frequently asked questions

Is Advantage+ Shopping better than manual campaigns?

For established stores with good tracking, steady purchase volume and plenty of creative, Advantage+ often delivers a lower cost per purchase. Manual campaigns are better for new pixels, niche targeting, product pushes and controlled creative tests. Most brands do best with a hybrid.

Can I run Advantage+ and manual campaigns at the same time?

Yes. A common structure is one main Advantage+ campaign with most of the budget, plus manual campaigns for creative testing and specific product or offer pushes.

How long should I test Advantage+ against manual?

Run both for at least two to three weeks with similar budgets, the same creative and the same conversion event, then compare new-customer results and blended Shopify revenue.
