Dynamic Product Ads (DPA) for Shopify: Complete Setup Guide

Dynamic product ads (DPA), now called Advantage+ catalog ads in Meta, automatically show people products from your Shopify catalog based on what they viewed, added to cart or are likely to buy. For stores with more than a handful of products, they're one of the most reliable campaign types on Meta.

This guide covers the full setup: catalog sync, event matching, product sets, campaigns and the creative tweaks that make catalog ads perform.

Quick summary

  • Connect your catalog through Shopify's Facebook & Instagram app so products sync automatically.
  • Your Pixel and Conversions API events must send product IDs that match the catalog.
  • Run catalog ads for retargeting (viewed/added to cart) and for broad prospecting.
  • Improve results with clean product data, product sets and catalog creative overlays.

What you need before starting

  • A Meta Business portfolio (Business Manager) with your ad account, Page and Pixel
  • Shopify's Facebook & Instagram app (by Meta) installed
  • Pixel plus Conversions API set to maximum data sharing. See setting up the Meta Conversions API on Shopify.
  • Product images, titles, prices and availability that are accurate in Shopify

Step 1: Sync your Shopify catalog

  1. In Shopify, open the Facebook & Instagram app and connect your Business portfolio, ad account, Page and Pixel.
  2. Enable product sync. Shopify creates a catalog in Meta Commerce Manager and keeps products, prices and stock updated automatically.
  3. In Commerce Manager, check the catalog: number of items, any items with errors, and that the catalog is connected to your Pixel as a data source.

Fix item errors early. Missing images, policy rejections or missing prices mean those products won't show in ads.

Step 2: Check event matching

Catalog ads only work if Meta can match ViewContent, AddToCart and Purchase events to products in the catalog. The events must include content_ids that match the catalog item IDs.

In Commerce Manager, open Events (or the data sources section) and look at the match rate for each event. You want it close to 100%. Low matching usually means variant IDs vs. product IDs don't line up, often caused by running multiple pixel apps or a custom theme script alongside the official app. Use one source of events, ideally the official app.

Step 3: Create product sets

Product sets are filtered groups of products you can advertise separately. Useful sets:

  • Bestsellers (via a Shopify collection or custom label)
  • High-margin products, so catalog spend goes where profit is
  • By category, for example men's / women's or product types
  • In stock, above a price, to avoid spending on cheap low-margin items
  • Exclude out-of-stock, gift cards and samples

Step 4: Build the campaigns

Catalog retargeting

  1. Create a Sales campaign and turn on the catalog option, then pick your catalog and product set.
  2. In the ad set, choose to retarget people who interacted with products: for example viewed or added to cart in the last 14 days but didn't purchase.
  3. Optimise for Purchase. Exclude purchasers from the last 7–30 days.

This is the classic DPA. The full abandoned-cart playbook, including timing and messaging, is in Facebook retargeting ads for abandoned carts.

Broad catalog prospecting

Catalog ads also work for new customers. Use a broad or Advantage+ audience, and Meta will show the products each person is most likely to buy, even if they've never visited. This is especially strong for stores with large catalogs (fashion, home, beauty, auto parts) where no single hero product carries the account.

Catalog ads inside Advantage+ sales

You can also add catalog ads to your main Advantage+ sales campaign alongside video and static ads. Meta then decides when to show catalog vs. regular creative.

Step 5: Make catalog creative stand out

Plain white-background product shots look like every other store. Simple tweaks help a lot:

  • Catalog frames and overlays: add price, discount, free shipping or a star rating directly in Ads Manager
  • Lifestyle images: upload extra images to the catalog and choose them for ads
  • Dynamic text: use product name and price fields in headlines
  • Intro cards: lead a carousel with a brand image or offer, then products
  • Catalog video: mix in short product videos where available

Step 6: Keep product data clean

The catalog is your creative in DPA, so product data quality matters:

  • Clear, descriptive titles (brand + product + key attribute)
  • High-quality images with no heavy text
  • Correct sale price and compare-at price so discounts display
  • Accurate stock so you never pay to advertise sold-out items

Frequently asked questions

What are dynamic product ads on Facebook?

Dynamic product ads, now called Advantage+ catalog ads, automatically show products from your catalog to people based on what they viewed, added to cart or are likely to buy. They are created from a template, so you do not design an ad for every product.

How do I connect my Shopify catalog to Facebook?

Install the Facebook & Instagram app by Meta in Shopify, connect your Business portfolio, ad account, Page and Pixel, and enable product sync. Shopify creates and updates the catalog in Meta Commerce Manager automatically.

Do dynamic product ads work for prospecting?

Yes. With broad or Advantage+ audiences, catalog ads can reach people who have never visited your store and show them the products they are most likely to buy. They work especially well for stores with large catalogs.
